I did not want anything from the new Bushmaster. I decided right away that I wanted a Windham, Me Bushmaster. Earlier this year, I undertook the task of building a clone of Travis Haley's Bushmaster that he used in Najaf, Iraq in 2004. I don’t own a Bushmaster, but (because I’m not a soldier or LEO) I would have no qualms about owning one. In 2010 when I took an AR Armorer’s class from a nationally recognized AR manufacturer he thought Bushmasters were OK guns, but that their chambers were rarely cut to 5.56 spec’s and sometimes the stamped barrel twist rate might be a loose approximation. Two points of reference: In 2008 when I took a rifle class from Pat Rogers, he referred to them derisively (and had been referring to them for a while) as BushHampster. But their QA/QC had always been somewhat spotty. I know that when the Freedom Group (or whatever their name is) bought the Bushmaster brand, their QA/QC took a hit in a short sighted attempt to improve the company’s profitability. The 1% of the population whose lives depend on their guns (those who carry guns professionally) are probably better served by a “professional grade” gun (Colt, FN, LMT, BCM, DD, KAC, LWRC, Noveske, LaRue, etc.). To the best of my knowledge Bushmaster has always made a “hobby grade” gun, a rifle that is good enough for 99% of the population to hunt or target shoot with. I guess I don’t understand your question? Bushmaster does not make a bad gun they just don’t make a great gun. “At what point in its production history did Bushmaster acquire a negative reputation for quality?”
